Who has participated?

This research program started at UT Austin and Dell Children's Medical Center in 2017. In 2020, we received funding (grant #R01DC018579) from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD), which was also the year that Texas Children's Hospital joined the team. Since then, we have been working together with patients undergoing surgery for epilepsy along with their families to understand how language develops in the brain and how this is influenced by age, epilepsy, and other diagnoses such as Autism Spectrum Disorder, ADHD, and more. We are grateful to all of our patients and their families for participating in this study. Below you can see the demographics of the many participants who have contributed to the research.

Note that this dashboard is updated every few weeks, and numbers may not reflect current enrollment.

Feedback from our participants and their families

Below we share some feedback from our participants and their families, compiled from an optional post-participation survey. This survey was approved by the Institutional Review Board at the University of Texas at Austin and by Baylor College of Medicine through a single IRB agreement. Quotes listed below are from participants and families who agreed to share their responses.

What would you tell other patients or families about what it's like to participate in research?

It's very simple and doesn't take a lot of time or energy to participate.
