How the Study Works
What will I or my child be doing in the research study?
If you are interested in participating in our research study, you may be wondering what exactly that will look like. Read below for details of what we might ask you to do.
What might we be asked to do?
Watching Movie Trailers
You or your child may watch short movie clips or movie trailers that are current and age appropriate. This allows us to look at how the brain responds to speech, music, and visuals.
Reading Sentences Aloud
You or your child may read aloud some sentences and listen to playback of your/their voice. This allows us to look at what the brain does differently when we speak versus when we listen.
Listening to Speech
You or your child may listen to sentences. This allows us to look at how the brain responds to different speech sounds like "s", "p", "ah", or "t".
Repeating sounds
You or your child may be asked to repeat consonant - vowel sounds like "ba", "da", or "ga". This allows us to look at speaking and listening in the brain for simple sounds.
Who is Eligible?
We are looking for patients with epilepsy age 2 and up who have been admitted for Phase II surgical monitoring of seizures.
What's the time commitment?
Participating in our research is COMPLETELY voluntary and is up to how you and/or your child feels! Typically we will attempt to do multiple sessions approximately 1 hour each session. You or your child could do as few or as many sessions and tasks as you wish. Additionally, be assured that we will always work around your family's clinical schedule and your child's medical needs!

Our research is funded by the National Institutes of Health through the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIH R01DC018579) and the Texas Speech-Language-Hearing Foundation (TSHF).
